The Weatherman

I am on the elliptical at the gym—more of a self-inflicted torture machine in my opinion—and watching the TV a bit, and I see one of our local weathermen. Let’s just say that he is a bit sensational. I begin to relish in the fact that once again, with watches and predictions galore, he’s wrong. “I wish I could have that job and be wrong all the time,” I say to myself. Thinking also that if I had a dollar for every time I’ve said or heard that in relation ... Read More »

Twenty-Six Names

I graduated from Virginia Tech on May 18, and moved to Jacksonville, Florida three weeks later to start my contract with Teach for America, a program that enlists professionals to teach for at least two years in low-income communities throughout the U.S. in an effort to eliminate educational inequity. I have never been to Florida and do not know anyone who lives there. I have never had a full time job and have never taught independently. I was anxious, but collaborating with people who were as passionate about education as ... Read More »

God as a Candle

I love to read inspirational quotes and shorts from a bunch of different sources.  I get some forwarded to me or I stumble across them and I sign up to receive the ongoing daily words. Having fallen out of the desire to be inspired by them, or having hit a few that just don’t move me to the degree of the one that caused me sign up in the first place, I tend to ignore them. Suddenly the inbox if filled with them.  Too many—I’ve been spammed by God! So ... Read More »

Our Spiritual Quilts

“How long have you been working on this?” That’s the question I asked the artist, Dominique Ehrmann, when I realized that she was the mastermind behind the magnificent piece of art in front of me. “Well there are two answers to that question. It took me about 1,000 hours to complete this piece. But it really took my entire life.” She went on to explain that she and her husband live in the woods and like to take walks together after work. The animals in her quilts were inspired by ... Read More »

Today I Saw God

When was the last time you saw God? I’m not talking about burning-bush-type-God sightings; I’m talking about those moments in life that cause you to pause and take a second breath because they are so beautiful that you cannot help but think that God is behind them. I see God the most in my kids. When I’ve got them lying on their backs, feet up in the air, laughing so hard as I tickle their bellies. With smiles so big and laughter so loud that I look into their faces ... Read More »

Shoes

Hola amigos! When I left the airport on Sunday I knew that the person I would miss the most was my little sister. On this trip there are two sets of sisters and every time I see them interact I think of my sister Emma. As she hugged me good-bye she told me that she couldn’t wait two years till she was able to come with me on a mission trip. She will be happy to know that all the money my parents gave me for the week has been ... Read More »

Bittersweet Goodbyes

Today was the last day at the CRC. The past two weeks have flown by in the blink of an eye. It seems like just yesterday we were meeting the kids for the first time and now we are packing our bags to leave. This morning we woke up and went right back over to the CRC to finish painting the last house. After four straight days of rolling, brushing and dabbing the paint onto the walls we have become experts and were able to finish all that we needed ... Read More »
