eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – August 1, 2013

Dear Floris Family, I have been on the road this past week. I officiated the wedding of a friend in Charleston, South Carolina. Karen, Sarah and I then took our daughter Kathryn a van load of her possessions for her new apartment. She will be teaching in Florida with Teach for America. It was great to see where she will be living as she begins a new chapter in her life. We were able to spend a few days relaxing and spending time together. She enjoyed the break a great ... eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – July 25, 2013

Dear Floris Family, I hope that you are enjoying a great summer. Several of you have commented how much you have enjoyed our new live stream opportunities every Sunday at 9:15 and 11 a.m. One Floris UMC member told me that she took her daughter and a friend on a cruise. It was Sunday when they disembarked and were in a shuttle. The girls asked her for her phone. She could not understand their urgency. It turned out that it was Sunday at 9:15 and they wanted to attend the ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – July 18, 2013

Dear Floris Family, When I saw the sign that read “quilt show” in our driveway, I assumed that it would be quaint and something that my wife would enjoy. The other day I toured the Sacred Threads exhibit in our Fellowship Hall and was simply amazed. This is a collection of art. It is amazing what people have been able to do with fabric, needle and thread. Each work has a theme and a small explanation of what the artist was thinking when the piece was created. I hope you ... Dear Floris Family, I am in the Outer Banks this week enjoying some vacation time with my family, but wanted to let you know about a couple of things happening at the church: Congregational Survey this Week I mentioned last week that we are conducting a congregational survey. Many of you will receive emails requesting participation. If you do not receive an email and wish to participate, we will be providing access to the survey via the web. Please open and complete the survey, it will only take a few minutes and will give ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – July 3, 2013

Dear Floris Family, I want to say another word of thanks to the over 100 volunteers who made Vacation Bible School (VBS) a great time for all the kids. I have spoken to many kids and parents who told me that they learned a lot about the Bible, had a great time doing crafts and playing games and really enjoyed the adults and students who brought VBS to life every day. I was surprised when Robert Bainum, one of our members who is in his 80’s, told me that he was ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin for June 27, 2013

Dear Floris Family, This has been a moving week to be a part of Floris UMC, a week in which I have been simply amazed every day at the joyful service that permeates our church. Many of us gathered with the Rill family for the visitation night and worship service to celebrate Bennett’s life and offer our grief to God. This was the largest funeral service in the history of our church. More than 400 cars brought well over 900 people into our facility. It was such a wonderful opportunity ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – June 20, 2013

The last week of school is a time of joy and celebration for kids everywhere. This has been muted by the death of Bennett Rill, a Floris member who was confirmed at Floris UMC this spring and who had just completed the 8th grade. I have spent time with the Rills this week and have seen how so many of you have ministered to their family. At times like this our area, which often seems so large, becomes like a small town where we see the overlap in the people ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin for Thursday, June 13, 2013

Dear Floris Family, As I write this I am at the North Carolina Annual Conference. I am speaking there with Dr. Lovett Weems, who co-authored Bearing Fruit with me. We are encouraging the pastors and laity to lead their churches to bear fruit for Christ. I am grateful for your prayers during this time and would ask you to pray for the pastors and laity of our sister churches in North Carolina this week. Our college trip to Sierra Leone was a great success. Our time at the CRC and ... Read More »

eNote from Rev. Tom Berlin – May 30, 2013

Dear Floris Family, Some of the best things Floris members are doing happen at their school or place of work. Ryan Crosby, who attends fourth grade at Floris Elementary, is a good example. Several weeks ago I showed a video about the Long brothers who participate in races together. Cayden Long has cerebral palsy. His brother Conner decided it would be great if they could do a triathlon together. The video of the Long brothers’ story we saw in worship was also shown in Ryan’s classroom by his teacher. Ryan ... Rev. Tom Berlin’s eNote – May 23, 2013

Dear Floris Family, I will be a part of the mission team to Sierra Leone next week. Our team will be composed primarily of college students from Floris and other partner churches. For many years I have enjoyed participating in Volunteer in Mission teams. I find that these experiences enable me to develop relationships with members of our church, see a part of the world very different from our own, and offer myself in service. I have not been to Sierra Leone in over two years and I am looking ... Read More »
