Floris United Methodist Church is a strong community of caring Christians that was established over 120 years ago in Herndon, Va. On this blog, Floris UMC represents all the members of the church that have contributed posts to "Today I Saw God."
Wendy is a health and fitness professional and Floris UMC member who moonlights as a writer. She blends faith and fitness on the field of play where young people inspire all her best writing material. She is the author of Fit2Finish: Keeping Your Soccer Players in the Game. Wendy and her husband, Scot, have three daughters and two dogs.
Rev. Tom Berlin is the lead pastor of Floris UMC. Tom was raised in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and has lived in Virginia most of his life. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and his Master of Divinity is from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He has co-authored three books and is the author of his own book and several small group studies. Tom and his wife, Karen, have four daughters.
Yoon Nam is the director of traditional music at Floris UMC. She has a Doctorate along with two Master's degrees in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance. Yoon enjoys spending time with her two daughters, Christine and Joanne.
Cynthia Lopynski served on the Floris UMC staff for 17 years and now works for the Alexandria/Arlington District Offices for the United Methodist Church in Northern Virginia. She has a passion for reaching new people for Christ and for vibrant, relevant, local churches. She is married to Jerry, and they have two daughters.
Susan worked at Floris UMC for ten years. She has a passion for connecting people and helping others share their stories through social media. She is married to a pastor named Tim and is a mom to three.
The Floris Student Mission Team includes any number of high school or middle school students who have gone on a mission trip with Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon, Virginia. Some of their trips include mission trips to Costa Rica, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Winchester, Virginia.
Jake McGlothin is the director of serve ministries at Floris UMC where he is responsible for leading the church's service and outreach programs and engaging Floris UMC members in transforming the community and the world.
Tim Ward is the lead pastor of Floris UMC's Reston campus, Restoration Church. He’s married to his wife, Susan, and has three children. He has a passion for connecting with people and would love to meet you.
Kelly Johnson is an author, speaker, and life coach with a passion for helping people live lives of courage, compassion and connection. She is the author of “Being Brave: A 40 Day Journey to the Life God Dreams for You. She leads a weekly Bible study at The Lamb Center, a day shelter for homeless and poor individual, where she also serves on the Board of Directors. She and her husband, Steve, are the proud parents of two young adult daughters, Alexandra and Brooke.
Rev. Barbara Miner serves as an associate pastor at Floris UMC. As director of worship, she is committed to offering Christ-centered, creative, caring worship that reflects the diverse population of her congregations. She is married to Marty, and they have three children.
Bill Gray works as director of grow ministries for Floris UMC. He is responsible for the connection, education and group life of Floris' adult congregation. Bill is married to his wife, Monica, and has four children.
Robin Sparks serves as lay leader at Floris and chair of the Lay Leadership Development Committee. These volunteer roles and her day job as a leadership coach and consultant enable her to live out her passion for helping others to reach their full potential. When Robin isn't working or at Floris UMC, she can usually be found enjoying a good book, taking a Zumba class or catching up with friends.
Kelly Crespin, children’s ministry director at Floris UMC, has a passion for bringing children to know Jesus. A homeschooling mom, Kelly has two daughters and three dogs. She has a passion for creative arts, reading and volunteer work.
Megan Seals is the contemporary worship leader at Floris UMC. Prior to taking on this role, she spent eight years teaching fifth and sixth grade in Fairfax County. Megan is a JMU alum, and she has a passion for worship, inclusion, mental health issues, exploring and learning about different cultures, and making space at the table for Christians who don’t fit the nuclear family model. On any given day you can find her biking, attempting yoga, binge-watching Pretty Little Liars with her stepdaughter, or arguing with her opinionated cat.
The Helping Children Worldwide Mission Team includes any people who have spent time on a Helping Children Worldwide mission trip, such as those to the Child Rescue Centre or Mercy Hospital in Sierra Leone, Africa.
Kerry Morgan is a 16+ year member of Floris UMC. She and her husband, JP, host Monday Night Football Fellowship Bible Study, which is now in its 12th year. Kerry's day job is at HR Certification Institute. But in life, she is the muse to her three mostly grown children, Sydney, Mackenzie and Tucker.
Jonathan Fuller is the fellows program coordinator at Floris UMC and a student at Wesley Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Abby, live in Fairfax, Virginia. They both love cooking, reading and the outdoors. Jonathan has a passion for leadership and experiential learning and is grateful to serve as a member of the Floris UMC staff and congregation.
Rev. Ashley Allen serves as an associate pastor at Floris UMC. She also oversees the student ministries program and finds great joy in working with the incredible students at Floris UMC. When Ashley is not at church she is spending time with her awesome niece.
Allison has attended Floris UMC for over ten years and is a graduate from Radford University with a degree in elementary education. Concentrating in English and special education during her studies, Allie has a passion for writing, teaching and children.
Born in Ethiopia, Tinbite has spent most of her life in Northern Virginia. She attended the University of Virginia and has a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology. Tinbite loves traveling and has had the opportunity to serve and live in Haiti, Ecuador and Ethiopia. Tinbite joined Floris UMC's Connections Ministry in 2014 and is responsible for coordinating all of Floris UMC's Sunday hospitality and special events.
The Floris Hurricane Sandy Team is made up of individuals from Floris UMC in Herndon, Virginia, who volunteer their time to go to New Jersey and New York to help with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in any way that they can.
Natasha Smith works as an Assistant Director with KinderCare Learning Centers. Her passion is music and encouraging others to live up to their full potential and past societal expectations. When she is not working with children, she is either singing with Full Circle at Floris UMC, or creating new arrangements and songs as part of her acoustic duo, Sparrow.
Karen Berlin has been a team member or leader on multiple short-term mission trips to Haiti. Initially serving on earthquake reconstruction teams, Floris UMC team members now focus on sustainable community development in Haiti. Karen works as a special education training and technical assistance coordinator at the VDOE TTAC at George Mason University. She is married to Floris UMC's lead pastor, Rev. Tom Berlin, and they have four daughters.
Teri Taylor is a professional volunteer who has supported numerous ministries at Floris UMC over the past 14 years. On occasion she is a copy editor consultant, but her main focus in life is raising her teenage daughter, Jessie, and being married to her wonderful husband, Rob. Her family shares their home with a furry pup named Monty. In her capacity as the Angel on Call Ministry Coordinator at Floris UMC, Teri enjoys working with the most amazing group of volunteers with hearts for servings people in need in the congregation. Teri enjoys serving others, traveling, reading, Bible study, walking and the arts.
Mark Rader serves as the executive director at Floris UMC. Mark has a passion for reaching others for Christ and for sharing his life experiences to help others. Prior to coming to Floris UMC, Mark worked as a hospital executive for 25 years. Mark is married to Amy, and they have a daughter named Helen.
Jason Richards has been a member of Floris United Methodist Church for almost a decade. When he isn't spending time at work or with his family, he can be found playing drums in Floris Full Circle, adding to his massive collection of bow ties, helping his son terrorize the cats, or recording new episodes of his podcast, The Masonic Roundtable.
Scott Nicholls has been a member of Floris since 2001. He has been with the Full Circle Praise Band since 2002 as an electric/acoustic guitarist. Scott as also led several years of Floris’ involvement with Rebuilding Together/Christmas in April as well as having participated in 18 mission trips including trips to Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Beach, Pulaski, VA, Tappahannock and Montross, VA, and Romney, WVA. He is looking forward to potential mission trips to Jacksonville, FL in 2018.
